20. Reading
What
price fashion?
You’re very excited and happy because you’ve spent the
day shopping with your friends. You all enjoy hanging out at the mall, chatting
and window shopping and sometimes you treat yourself to something new,
especially when you can find an affordable bargain in the sales. Today’s outing
was very successful. You’ve come home with a new top that will go with the
trousers you bought last week. You’re going out to a party this evening, so
you’ll be able to show off your new purchases. You love dressing up and you
know you’ll feel like a million dollars. Everyone will compliment you, tell you
how attractive you look and ask you where you got your outfit and you’ll be
able to tell them that you got a really good deal with a 50% reduction.
But high-street fashion comes at a price, doesn’t it?
Have you ever stopped to check the label of your latest purchases to see where
your clothes have been manufactured? The chances are that they will have been
made in China or another country where labour costs are considerably lower than
in Europe. How could they be so cheap otherwise? As our demand for cheaper and
cheaper goods increases, so the conditions of workers in so-called sweatshops
get worse. With many of these workers, often children, earning less than $1 a
day. Isn’t it time that the large clothing manufacturers started to take responsibility
for their actions? Don’t you think that they have a duty to take care of their
employees?
Of course, there are many companies who trade ethically
and pay decent living wages so it’s not all doom and gloom on the high street.
If you do care though, you’ll be surprised at just how much power you have as a
consumer, and there are many things you can do to make your voice heard. You
can boycott companies whose policies are exploitative. After all, they are
interested in making a good profit and if people stop buying their goods, their
profits will inevitably fall. You can look out for the Fairtrade symbol which
is a sign that the product has been ethically sourced, to an extent anyway, and
of course you can use social media to get the message out there. So, next time
you go on a shopping spree, check out the labels and don’t let those companies
get away with it!
