Reading
Read the text then answer the questions (Unit 5)
The glamorous world of fashion
Let’s face it: whichever way you look at it, fashion is big business and you can’t avoid being influenced by it. You only need go into any store and take a look at the rows of magazines for both men and women dedicated to fashion and style.
I, for one, don’t claim to be in any way a follower of fashion, but I do enjoy reading about the latest must-haves, not only in clothing but also in accessories and perfumes. One of my secret pleasures is to watch the super models on the catwalks of Paris, Milan and London as they present the latest creations from the world’s leading fashion houses.
It is interesting to observe that although the fashion industry caters primarily to women (and nowadays increasingly to men), there are very few female fashion designers of note. One who does spring to mind, however, is Victoria Beckham, former Spice Girl, wife of footballer David Beckham and mother of four.
The Beckhams are recognised the world over as one of today’s most stylish couples, with companies knowing that sales of their products will soar if endorsed by either David or Victoria. When Victoria decided to create her own fashion label, most people thought she wouldn’t make it. She has, of course, proved her critics wrong! Launching her label in 2008, she won designer brand of the year at the British Fashion Awards in 2011. She opened her first shop in London in 2014 and was voted UK entrepreneur of the year in the same year. With a turnover of £30 million and a staff of 100, she has certainly made her mark in the fashion world.
So, how much does being in style matter to you? Do you pore over the latest designs? Do you plan your wardrobe based on the season’s colours? Do you buy clothes according to what the style gurus tell you? Skirts: short or knee-length; trousers: bootcut or flares; shirts; with or without collars; heels; low or high. Or do you, like me, have your own style with only a moderate interest in what everyone else is wearing? Personally, I see clothes as one way of expressing your personality so, isn’t it good to stand out from the crowd?

8. Choose the best answers.
According to the writer, the fashion industry is …
a just as interested in men’s fashion as women’s fashion.
b more interested in men’s fashion than it used to be.
c not interested in men’s fashion at all.
When she started her fashion label, Victoria Beckham …
a had a lot of support.
b was immediately successful.
c was underestimated.

9. Find words or phrases in the text that mean …
affected (paragraph 1)
jewellery, scarves, bags (paragraph 2)
notice (paragraph 3)
all over the world (paragraph 4)
5  be noticeable (paragraph 5)
